Who is Kundora Chamundi?

Kundora Chamundi is understood as a fierce form of Kali, and in one reading a partial form of the goddess Kaushiki, who defeated the demon Darika. She is counted among the warrior goddesses and is honoured both as a guardian of the village and of the household. The Theyyam is traditionally kept by the Velan community.

The story

In the story, the goddess disguised herself as a beggar woman and tricked Darika’s wife and daughters into revealing a secret threefold mantra. She then rode a Vetala, a spirit, into battle for seven days and nights, and according to one popular account, on the last day she took hold of the demon’s hair and cut off his head.

Afterwards she is said to have sought purification at several rivers, and a priest called Kundora Tantri captured her essence in a copper vessel. These accounts come from popular sources and differ in detail.
