Who is Muchilot Bhagavathi?
Muchilot Bhagavathi is the family deity of the Vaniya community in North Malabar. Her shrines are traditionally numbered at 108, echoing the 108 Shiva temples of the Shivalaya Stotram. She is widely described as the most elaborate and beautiful of all Theyyams.
The story
The best-known story tells of a gifted young Brahmin woman of Perinchellur who defeated senior scholars in debate. Jealous, they challenged her character and drove her out. She took refuge at a temple and asked to be consumed by fire. A Vaniya man carrying oil passed by, and she asked him to pour it over her. With Shiva’s blessing she returned as a goddess.
Later she revealed herself to a soldier of the Kolathiri king and his wife, who began to worship her as their family deity. A sacred manuscript of her tradition tells it differently, as a goddess created by Shiva for the good of the world.
