Who is Karimchamundi?

Karimchamundi is one of the best-known Chamundi forms in North Malabar. “Kari” or “karim” means dark or black, so the name is usually understood as the dark Chamundi. Like the other forms, she is a fierce, protective mother goddess who is honoured for guarding a family or place.

The story

Chamundi is identified with Kali and Durga in the older stories, where she overcomes the demons Chanda and Munda. In local tradition each Chamundi form has its own story and shrine. We have not found one settled account of Karimchamundi that all sources agree on, and the story differs between families and shrines, so we do not repeat one here.

What you will see

Karimchamundi appears in large attire of palm-leaf strips with a painted face and a decorated headdress. In photographs, the long palm-leaf skirt forms a wide, rounded shape.

In the tradition

Chamundi shrines are often kept by families and ruling clans. The ritual follows older customs, including offerings that differ from those of many temples.

A note for visitors

Fierce goddesses are approached with respect and some distance. Let your guide place you. Photography and video are not allowed at some rituals, so ask your guide first.
