Hundreds of Theyyams exist, each with its own story. Three of the best known are Muthappan, Pottan and Vishnumoorthi. This is a short introduction, not a complete list.

Muthappan

Muthappan is among the most widely worshipped deities of the Kannur region, often described as a god of ordinary people who is close, approachable and generous. He is associated with the Parassinikkadavu shrine, and his worship has its own customs, including offerings that differ from many other temples.

Pottan

Pottan Theyyam retells the story of Shiva appearing in the guise of a lowly man to challenge the sage Adi Shankara, teaching that the divine does not belong to one caste. It carries a strong message about humility and equality.

Vishnumoorthi

Vishnumoorthi is linked to the Narasimha avatar of Vishnu, the half-man, half-lion who destroys a tyrant. It is a powerful, intense form, with a large headdress and strong, sudden movements.
